Market Update: Big Tech Carried the Indexes Higher as Small Caps Lagged, July 13, 2026

USER·

Big Tech kept the tape green, but breadth still looked shaky

Friday's session, July 10, ended higher across the major US benchmarks, though it hardly felt like a broad risk,on move. The S&P 500 climbed 0.42% to 7,575.39, the Nasdaq Composite added 0.29% to 26,281.61 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 149.60 points, or 0.29%, to 52,637.01, according to CNBC. Bloomberg market data showed the same close and also highlighted that the 10,year Treasury yield finished around 4.57%, leaving rates elevated even as equities ground higher Bloomberg.

The more useful read for traders is that leadership stayed narrow. Small caps underperformed, with the Russell 2000 down 0.49% to 2,977.81, while the VIX fell to roughly 15, a sign that index calm is masking weaker participation under the hood, according to Stock Market Watch. That makes this a different market story from last week's oil shock and chip snapback. The lead angle now is concentration: a handful of mega, cap winners are doing the heavy lifting while broader cyclicals and smaller companies struggle to confirm the move.

Nvidia and Meta did the lifting

The best, performing names that mattered most to the indexes were again in mega, cap tech. Nvidia rose about 4% on Friday and Meta Platforms jumped about 6%, helping the S&P 500 post a winning session and capping Meta's best week since early 2024, according to CNBC. Separate market coverage also noted Nvidia finished Friday at $210.96, up 4.0% on the day and 8.3% for the week TS2.

That tells you where buyers are still willing to pay up: AI infrastructure, ad,driven mega, cap growth and anything with perceived earnings durability. The risk is obvious. When a rally depends on two or three names, any disappointment in guidance, capex commentary or inflation, sensitive discount rates can hit the index harder than headline strength suggests. Traders should treat the latest highs as increasingly dependent on earnings execution, not just multiple expansion.

Treasury yields stayed high as Fed nerves lingered

The bond market did not give equities much help. The Cboe 10,year Treasury note yield index closed Friday at 45.69, which translates to about 4.569%, according to Cboe. Bloomberg's market dashboard also showed the US 10,year yield near 4.57% into the weekend Bloomberg.

That matters because yields have stayed elevated despite the market's willingness to own growth. Fidelity's weekly recap said the latest FOMC minutes added to investor anxiety by showing that a handful of policymakers were still making the case for tighter policy in response to inflation pressure Fidelity. Put simply, stocks are acting as if earnings can outrun rates. This week's inflation data will test that assumption quickly.

Oil cooled from the spike, but the Middle East is still the macro risk

Crude pulled back from the week's panic highs but remained expensive enough to keep traders on edge. Bloomberg's market snapshot showed US crude near $72.79 late Friday Bloomberg. Reuters, via a syndicated market report, said oil eased on July 10 but was still headed for a weekly gain as renewed US,Iran fighting and shipping disruption in the Strait of Hormuz kept supply risk front and center Reuters.

That leaves traders with an awkward macro setup. If crude stabilizes or drifts lower, equities can keep leaning into growth and AI. If the Strait of Hormuz risk flares again, the market is back to worrying about inflation passthrough, consumer pressure and a Fed that may stay restrictive longer than equities want. That geopolitical overhang is still the cleanest explanation for why cyclicals and small caps have not fully joined the rally.

Gold slipped, crypto stayed mixed

Gold eased into the weekend after a volatile week shaped by inflation worries and haven demand. One market recap showed August gold settling down $27.10, or 0.65%, at $4,113.70 an ounce on July 10 Investrade. CME quotes on Monday morning showed front, month gold around $4,060, indicating some follow, through weakness at the start of the new week CME Group.

Crypto was not driving cross, asset sentiment, but it's worth noting as a secondary risk barometer. Bitcoin traded around $63,000 early Monday, according to CoinMarketCap, while Ethereum changed hands near $1,785 to $1,836 across major trackers CoinDesk and CoinMarketCap. That points to a crypto market that is stable enough not to flash acute stress, but not strong enough to signal a fresh speculative breakout either.

Earnings season and CPI are now the real catalysts

The calendar gets more important from here. CNBC's week, ahead preview said investors are heading into June inflation data and the start of earnings season while US,Iran hostilities remain in the background CNBC. Trading Economics' earnings calendar shows the bigger market, moving reports arrive Tuesday and Wednesday, with JPMorgan, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo due on July 14, followed by Johnson & Johnson, Morgan Stanley and BlackRock on July 15 Trading Economics.

Those reports should tell traders whether this rally can broaden. If banks show decent loan demand, stable credit quality and resilient trading revenue, that could help financials close the gap with tech. If not, the market is likely to stay in the same regime it finished last week in: index gains that look healthy on the surface but rely heavily on a very short list of winners.

What to Watch Today

  • June CPI this week. This is the key test for the recent rise in Treasury yields and for expectations around the Fed path.
  • Bank earnings begin in earnest on Tuesday, July 14, with JPMorgan, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo, according to Trading Economics.
  • Watch whether the Russell 2000 can stop lagging. Another day of small, cap weakness alongside mega, cap strength would reinforce the narrow, rally message.
  • Monitor the 10,year yield around 4.57%. A push materially above that level could pressure long, duration tech even if headline earnings stay solid.
  • Keep an eye on crude. Any new disruption tied to the Strait of Hormuz or fresh US,Iran escalation could quickly become the day's dominant macro driver, according to Reuters.
  • Single, stock focus remains on Nvidia and Meta after last week's outsized gains. If they fade, index support may look thinner than Friday's close suggested.
